Detroit is getting a helping hand in the local, sustainable food movement from national organizations. Food Corps, a group modeled after AmeriCorps, just graduated 50 volunteers last week to be sent to 10 US cities to combat childhood obesity. Corps members will work for a year in their assigned area with local organizations to improve food quality and choices for schoolchildren by instituting or improving gardens, giving nutrition classes in school, and establishing farm-to-school food programs.
