WHY SERVE IN MICHIGAN?

FoodCorps Michigan has connected over 50,000 children to healthy food in schools across the state since 2010. We complement school wellness objectives by placing FoodCorps’ trained AmeriCorps members in kindergarten through 8th grade classes, where they deliver our evidence-backed program to students. Our members work with staff, students, and community members to implement evidence-based strategies that get kids eating healthy.

We’re Number 2! Agriculture is Michigan’s second largest industry, which puts us among the top producers of asparagus, apples, blueberries, cherries, and dry beans in the country. We are the 2nd most diverse agricultural producer in the nation and have access to 20% of the earth’s fresh water. Michigan is also home to innovative programs including the Fair Food Network and Double Up Food Bucks, which doubles the value of federal nutrition benefits spent on local fruits and vegetables at participating markets and grocery stores. One of our partner sites, Groundworks Center for Resilient Communities, initiated the acclaimed program,10 Cents A Meal for School Kids & Farms. The state-funded program provides schools with match incentive funding up to 10 cents per meal to purchase and serve Michigan-grown fruits, vegetables and legumes. Other initiatives, like the Michigan Good Food Charter and numerous farmers markets, exemplify the energy and interest the state holds in making food a source of revitalization and development throughout the state.

FoodCorps service members have the opportunity to take advantage of a state rich in cultural and geographic diversity. We boast urban, suburban, and rural sites with their own unique set of engaging characteristics, as well as thought-provoking challenges. We welcome all to apply for an experience to learn, give back, and grow!
