Yesterday’s verdict is a small step toward accountability, but there is much more work to do to dismantle the institutional and structural racism that has shaped our food system, education system, and our country as a whole. We must do more than convict—we must show Black kids that their lives are valued by ending the pattern of racist violence.
In a truly just system, George Floyd and Ma’Khia Bryant would be alive today, and so would Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, Elijah McClain and Tamir Rice, and so many other lives lost to senseless violence. We’re thinking of their families and communities today.
