Cultivating Beats

At Kohala Elementary FordCorps service member, Miss Kayla, is taking garden time to a whole new level. On a beautiful Friday afternoon, students, teachers and guests came together in partnership with Lava Roots for a celebration called “Rhythms of the Soil”. The event brought people together to learn about West African culture drum and dance, and even try out their dancing shoes. Lava Roots encouraged everyone to get moving, learn about new cultures, and understand the importance of energy inside and outside the garden. Just like how the sun gives plants energy, the drums can give us energy as well. Lava Roots successfully showed kids that the garden can be more than just a place to grow plants- but also a fun space for cultural learning, meditation, community, and not to mention great music!
