Statement: FoodCorps Applauds President Biden’s Plan to Permanently Raise SNAP Benefits
Significant increase to monthly benefits will help support families with children and their access to healthy food
This week the Biden administration announced plans to modernize the Thrifty Food Plan and permanently raise the average benefits for SNAP recipients by more than 25 percent, the highest increase in the program’s history. This move comes after a number of plans from President Joe Biden to address food insecurity amid the ongoing global pandemic.
FoodCorps applauds President Biden’s action, which will give families and caretakers more peace of mind in being able to provide their children with healthy food at home. With schools back in session for the new school year, legislators and the Biden administration can further ensure child well-being by prioritizing Child Nutrition Reauthorization this fall, as child nutrition laws haven’t been updated in ten years. School meals are a key component for children’s ability to thrive both inside the classroom and beyond. Through Child Nutrition Reauthorization, Congress has the opportunity to provide more healthy meals in the cafeteria, create more opportunities for garden education, source school meals from local farms, and upgrade cafeteria equipment so that schools can make healthy and delicious meals from fresh, local ingredients.
